Course Description: When thinking about maritime history, one will in the first place think of ships and the history of the development of ships. But maritime history also is the history of overseas contacts, struggle between maritime powers over trade routes and colonies, the development of ports and the social conflicts there, the first contacts of Europeans with people from other continents and the position of sailors and their families. It therefore is about trade an trade conflicts, war and colonial expansion, the ideas of Europeans on people from Africa or Asia, on the position of these people when they came in a European port and racial conflicts in ports as shipowners preferred black people over whites as the former were less paid. On the position of women that had to raise a family with out a husband as he lived on a ship or even died on sea
