In this course, an overview is given of the history of the Netherlands from the medieval period to the present. A particular emphasis will be put on how Dutch history fits in a broader European and global context. During the course, students will also be invited to critically assess the history of the Netherlands by applying globalizing perspectives (e.g., focus on transnational and translocal developments, comparative approaches and new unexplored perspectives). Students understand the broad outlines of the history of the Netherlands in a European and global context from the medieval period to the present. They can describe the significance of the various factors that led to the Dutch Revolt in the 16th century. They can illustrate the significance of various political, economic and cultural factors that impacted Dutch society from the medieval period to the present.
