Course Title:
Surveillance and the Media
Course Number:
CM4650
Course Description:
New technologies and related practices are a source of excitement, anxiety and inspiration. This is especially the case when these technologies are used to monitor people, or allow those people to monitor others. Shared understandings of emerging and controversial technologies are shaped by popular media representations in entertainment. Science-fiction, sitcoms and song lyrics (among other sources) provide coherent and lasting accounts of what it feels like to watch or be watched. Moreover, the way we watch others through media such as reality television and live-streaming also shapes our understanding of what kinds of surveillance are acceptable.
This course explores the role of the media in accounting for surveillance practices and digitalisation. This includes a historic and multi-cultural overview of the viewer society. Upon discussing and engaging with relevant concepts and methodological approaches, students will carry out small scale empirical analysis of media content.
