Course Description: This course will examine the changes in Chinese media over the last three decades. It discusses how political, economic and social forces constrain the media and how the media, in turn, shapes society and politics. It looks at the history of the media in China, processes of commercialization and internet development, and the state of investigative journalism and online activism and the media’s relationship with civil society, as well as state propaganda and censorship. The course concludes by covering differences in the media in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and looking at the recent internationalization of China’s media.
