Course Number:

Course Description:
Why are some rich, while others remain poor? How have international trade, states, institutions, and (human) capital flows affected economic growth? These are some of the key questions that economic history deals with. Since 1500 the world has seen a wide variety of economic developments, such as industrialization, imperialism and colonialism, waves of globalization and deglobalization, and the rise and fall of economic centers. Transportation- and communication technologies have created a smaller world with a higher level of economic interdependence. These developments have had profound impacts on the economic development of regions around the world. Apart from war and treaties, the field of international relations also includes this economic dimension through trade, investment and other monetary relations. This course focuses on international trade and the development of international monetary systems. Furthermore, economic policies have varied over time, ranging from mercantilist power politics to international economic collaboration and from free trade
