This unit provides an introduction to sustainability challenges in engineering decision making and reviews the importance of the move towards renewable energy systems in the context of reducing our global footprint. The unit focuses on introducing the main global sustainability challenges together with an introduction to renewable energy technologies including Wind energy, Hydro energy, Geothermal energy, Tidal energy, Bio-energy, Solar energy and Wave energy, their application, efficiency and sustainability benefits. The course also reviews the broader technical, economic and environmental challenges faced in incorporating renewable energy into mainstream electricity production systems. The unit frames the use and need for renewable energy systems within a global context and the drivers and barriers faced by government and industry in adopting renewable energy systems.
