Course Description: Health promotion action not only strengthens individual skills and capabilities but also influences social, environmental, political and economic conditions to improve health at a population level. This unit is an introduction to the principles and values of health promotion as a theoretical foundation for contemporary practice, policy and research. Critical concepts in health promotion are explored including: historical contexts and developments; key frameworks and theory underpinning health promotion; health promotion case studies; evidence-informed health promotion practice; ethics and the role of the health promotion practitioner in public health.
