Course Description:
The objective of this course is to examine how the world is organized and governed. Global governance, to borrow John Ruggie's expression, is about ‘how the world hangs together' or, as the Commission for Global Governance put it, it is about ‘the many ways in which individuals and institutions, public and private, manage their common affairs'. Indeed, at present there is a whole range of issues that require collective action at the global level - climate change, migration, terrorism and transnational crime, trade and financial transactions, humanitarian emergencies, pandemics, and many others. And there exist multiple actors, both public and private, involved in regulating and managing these processes: states and international organisations; non-governmental organisations, business firms, private foundations and philanthropies; and different public-private partnerships that bring together state and non-state actors to deal with specific issues.
