Course Description:
The lectures in the course will give a topical overview of the history of Europe from around 1800. Important moments (such as 1815 and 1914), periods (such as the interbellum) and themes (colonialism and decolonization) as well as actors (US president Wilson and Margaret Thatcher) will be discussed during the course. They will be contextualized in regard to developments on a global scale and important ideologies such as nationalism, liberalism, socialism and imperialism. Concepts such as state, nation and citizenship will also be included.
The relationship between European history and current developments and events in Europe will be highlighted.
The course will also engage with the variety of sources, including photographs, paintings and films.
