Course Description:
This unit examines what people of diverse cultural and social backgrounds understand by sustainability. It looks at how they are affected by and respond to state, market and wider community strategies to bring about more sustainable ways of living. Some of the main topics may include: the idea of sustainability in social science; the relationship between social, cultural and environmental notions of sustainability; how people understand and relate to the natural world; the social and cultural meaning of sustainable development; and sustainable bodies. Case materials will be drawn from various sociocultural contexts around the world.
