Course Title:
DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE
Course Number:
DSPO 25A49
Course Description:
Human beings live together in societies. This produces a whole range of benefits, although it also imposes certain burdens that must be borne to sustain that social cooperation. Hence any society needs a way of distributing those burdens and benefits. In short, there must be a way of deciding who will get how much. To be a fair and good society, the principles of distribution must be morally correct. This is the problem of distributive justice. In this course, we will explore how the burdens and benefits of social cooperation should, as a matter of justice, be distributed. We will consider a range of answers that have been offered by some of today's most prominent analytical political philosophers, all based on the philosophical method of reflective equilibrium. We will consider and evaluate their arguments in detail, to develop our own understanding of our preferred conception of distributive justice.
