Course Title: GLOBAL POLITICAL ECONOMY AND INEQUALITY
Course Number: DAFF 25A87
Course Description: There is growing attention to inequalities in income, wealth, and life chances. These debates often focus on inequality within societies of the global north. In the seminar, we go beyond this focus in two ways. First, we will engage from a political-science perspective with the stark material inequalities that exist between countries and world regions. Second, we cover the transnational political-economy processes that shape inequalities within and between countries. This includes perspectives on the winners and losers of global trade, the deregulation of global finance, the precarity created along global production chains, tax evasion of multi-national companies, migration, and the rise of global tech companies. We will reflect on the consequences of these processes for, inter alia, democracy, gender relations, and climate change.
