Course Description: This unit explores the role of popular music in the production of identity- personal, sub-cultural and national. From a Cultural Studies perspective, music will be explored as a site of production and consumption within the context of global capitalism. How music frames the notions of generation (specifically youth), gender and sexuality, race and nation, and class, through a close study of several major musical movements in contemporary history, will also be explored.
