Course Title: Climate and the Biosphere
Course Number: ERTH3001
Course Description: This unit introduces students to the deep-time history of our habitable planet, and evolution of its climate and life forms, demonstrating how interactions between the biosphere, geosphere and climate systems have been, and still are, key in shaping the world around us. Subjects covered include: the key stages in the evolution of life on earth from the Precambrian through to the Anthropocene; the geological context of climate change; how climate and life act as reciprocal controls on earth's surface systems; the recurring role of climate change in mass extinctions, their causes, precursors, and recovery; interpreting the fossil record; and the use of fossil preservation, morphology and chemistry to reconstruct past ecosystems, modes of life and environments. In the workshops, students will develop hands-on experience of examining, identifying and interpreting plant, invertebrate, and vertebrate fossil material and interpreting paleoenvironmental data.
