Course Description:
The continuous development of new technologies in the field of human reproduction is leading to radical changes in society, particularly as regards gender relations and family structure. The potential of reproductive medicine to enhance individual reproductive autonomy but also the possible “dangers” of certain technologies such as gene editing are the subject of serious debate between ethicists, lawyers, policy-makers and other stakeholders such as human rights activists. This course will introduce students to the main contemporary debates around human reproduction and will discuss their potential impact on society, particularly as regards gender roles and family diversity. This course will build on several disciplines, particularly law but also gender studies, sociology or bioethics, and will discuss court cases (especially from the European Court of Human Rights), pieces of legislation, media articles and videos as well as sociological and philosophical writings and other sources.
