Institution: Curtin University
Course Title: Marine Ecology
Course Number: MARI2000
Course Description: This unit will cover the ecological processes that drive temperate and tropical marine communities, and the quantitative methods used to describe them. Students will acquire practical skills in developing hypotheses and research questions, collection of field data, and the various univariate and multivariate analyses used to measure ecological data. There will be particular emphasis on long-term monitoring and experimental design and how these are used to measure natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Topics covered include; population dynamics and processes; gene flow and connectivity; biogeography and distribution patterns; life-history attributes; biodiversity patterns in marine habitats and methods used to study community structure including diversity indices and ordination. Students are assumed to have a working knowledge of basic statistics.
