Country: Australia
Institution: Curtin University
Course Title: Environmental Applications of Geographic Information Science and Remote Sensing
Course Number: SPAT2014
Course Description: Developed for Environmental Scientists, this unit teaches principles of Geographic Information Science (GISc) and Remote Sensing (RS) with a large emphasis on enabling students to explore practical and contemporary environmental issues interactively. The GISc content focuses on LiDAR point cloud processing, terrain analysis (geomorphometry, potential incoming solar radiation, hydrology) for use in species distribution modelling, spatial pattern analysis and geostatistics. The RS portion includes the use of satellites and UAVs (drones) for capturing imagery of the Earth’s surface. Students will use the different image sources to learn rectification, mosaicking and a variety of image processing techniques (e.g. spectral indices, classification algorithms). Maths Application ATAR is included in the pre-requisites for this unit.
