Course Title:
Physics 2
Course Number:
PHYS1007
Course Description:
Physics 2 assumes that students have passed Physics ATAR and Mathematics Methods ATAR or equivalent (or higher). Students who have not passed these units or equivalent should enrol in PHYS1006 Foundations of Physics. The unit begins with an introduction to AC and DC circuits, basic circuit components, and their applications. The course then explores two pillars of modern physics: quantum mechanics and relativity. The study of quantum mechanics begins with its origins in the photoelectric effect and leads up to the time independent solution of Schrodinger's wave equation. An introduction to both general and special relativity is included. This course includes a laboratory component which will involve experiments and computer simulations that are linked to the lecture material and will give students experience and understanding in measurement and uncertainties, physical data analysis and report writing.
