Course Description:
This course surveys the literary and philosophical traditions of East Asia from the
premodern period to the present, with the basic assumption that literary texts are a
product of their cultural milieu. Through reading and discussion of a selection of
canonical works in translation, the student will come to understand the principal
modes of traditional East Asian literary and philosophical thought.
