Introduces the field of molecular biology. It is designed to assist in the scientific development of students by transmitting recent innovations of genetic techniques, and how they are applied in agriculture, terrestrial and marine environments. The unit is delivered in three sections. Section 1 covers foundations in the structure and function of DNA/RNA, how it is isolated and sequenced. In Section 2, students will focus on a set of practical and bioinformatics exercises, inclusive of a group assignment and scientific writing, which are relevant to their academic discipline. Section 3 focuses on a 'capstone' essay that requires students to review scientific literature and apply the knowledge and research skills that are delivered throughout the semester. The unit focuses on problem solving and critical thinking - it conveys practical skills in molecular biology and bioinformatics.
