This course provides an introduction to the history of women in Japan. Traveling through the history from ancient times to the early twentieth century, we will investigate a wide range of issues concerning women, such as political participation, marriage, reproduction, religion, education, occupations, and social roles. In addition to the lectures, the class will emphasize discussions based on a critical analysis of the assigned reading materials.
