Philosophy of Science
Course Number:

Course Description:
The purpose of this class is to develop an understanding of the major topics and debates in the philosophy of science. To gain such an understanding, we will read the works of various philosophers of science from the twentieth-century. In particular, we will read authors such as Ayer, Feyerabend, Hempel, Kuhn, Lakatos, and Popper. Through our readings we will consider questions such as: Is science objective? Is it rational? Is there such a thing as a “scientific” method? When should one scientific theory be abandoned for another? What constitutes a scientific explanation? Are scientific entities (e.g. electrons) real? What demarcates the sciences from other fields? What roles should values play in science? How are the natural sciences and the social sciences different from each other?
