Course Description: This course introduces an area of social thought known as the Frankfurt School of critical theory. The Frankfurt School was established in the early 20th century by a group of German philosophers and social theorists affiliated with the University of Frankfurt, and its goal was to develop an interdisciplinary program of social research that was informed by dialectical philosophy. Critical theory was meant to offer a way of evaluating the conditions of modern life so that the possibilities of human emancipation could be specified. We will see how this project has evolved across generations. This course will take a close look at the writings of the Frankfurt School’s leading figures: Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, and Jürgen Habermas, among others.
