Course Description: The purpose of this course is to introduce and examine the writings of five scholars of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who established the intellectual foundations of sociology: Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Georg Simmel, and George Herbert Mead. Most of the semester will be dedicated to studying the writings of the first three authors. In reading their works closely, the goal is to have students develop the ability to think theoretically: to be able to understand and evaluate sociological arguments, and to be able to apply sociological concepts and ideas to the real world. The classical theorists continue to be relevant because we are still trying to answer many of the questions they have posed: How does capitalism work, and what are its problems? Does religion have a role to play in modern society? What are the implications of living in a rational, bureaucratized social structure? How
