Course Title: LIBERALISM, DEMOCRACY, AND THE LAW
Course Number: DDRO 27A48
Course Description: This course will explore the tension in American politics and political thought between democracy and liberalism. We will examine the various meanings of these terms and situate the development of these meanings in their historical political and economic context. Special attention will be given to the prominent role of American legal institutions and the “civic religion” of constitutionalism in mediating this tension, as well as to the legal and ideological division of the political and economic into public and private spheres. We will critically engage with a variety of readings from a socio-political -- rather than purely legalistic -- perspective, in a discussion class format. Assignments will consist of reading presentations and a take-home final essay.
