Course Description: The student can explain the theoretical perspectives for analysing welfare states and their development and can distinguish between policy traditions. The student can interpret the development of welfare state models and can apply welfare state theories to explain policy choices and differences. The student can critically discuss the multiple and profound challenges faced by contemporary welfare states. The student can apply the central concepts presented in the course materials to their own academic writing. The course outlines the development of welfare states and presents theoretical tools for analysing them. The context of welfare state models is used to understand policy and policy instruments by giving a background for summarising issues, policy options, and how they fit into different regimes. The profound challenges faced by contemporary welfare states are also critically discussed.
