This course focuses on how different kinds of meanings are conveyed and how they interact and/or are controlled by other factors, drawing examples mainly from English and Japanese. Basic concepts to be covered include: --reference, sense, and proposition --natural language and logical language --valence and thematic roles -lexical semantics -contextual information -implicature, presupposition, speech act theories -discourse
