We all know that animals (and even insects) can communicate with each other, but our way of communication is fundamentally different in that it is greatly facilitated by language, whose structure seems species-specific. This course concentrates on this part of human language with special reference to its syntax, a set of rules that govern the way the words in a sentence come together. The underlying assumption behind the paragraph above is that all human languages in the world are rule-governed and structurally the same at an abstract level, and, in this respect, they contrast sharply with other modes of communication employed by bees, bats, dolphins, etc, which all seem to lack systematic structure that allows users to create an infinite number of novel language expressions.
