Course Title:
Society and Social Relations
Course Number:
YK-212
Course Description:
After completing the course, the student understands the diversity and new forms of social relations as part of social change on the basis of anthropological theories. In addition, the course encourages the student to critically examine the concepts of a community and to question the notions of social relationships based on agreements or biology.
What is a community and what kind of relationships bind people together? The course covers anthropological perspectives on the conceptualisation of communities and social relations. The key themes include family and ethnicity. The study of family connections, kinship, is a central part of the history of anthropological theory. Kinship is also key to understanding contemporary cultures and communities and their changes. The course examines what new types of families and reproductive technologies say about kinship and how social relationships are shaped through new media, for example. In addition, students learn about kinship as an imagined community and part of public culture, as well as how kinship relates to power structures and politics.
