Course Description: Course Description This introductory course offers an overview of central issues pertaining to the study of Asia. The course surveys the region’s history and contemporary developments from an interdisciplinary perspective, including geography, history, culture, religion, economics and politics. The central aim of the course is to lay the foundation for a systematic understanding of Asia, helping students to prepare for more advanced and specialized courses on Asia. We will pay particular attention to how historical, cultural, religious, and philosophical traditions have intersected with contemporary political, economic and social developments in Asia. We will also examine similarities and differences in sub-regions of Asia, namely Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Northeast Asia.
