Course Description: This course surveys Korean realist literature, one of the primary literary genres stemming from the colonial period and continuing into contemporary South Korea. Korean authors’ attention to realism has persisted from the early stages of modernization as the predominate exploited group characterized by the new mode of production witnessing dynamic social changes. These writers have kept their eyes on marginalized populations and ignored social issues and described the difficulties faced in their daily lives. Furthermore, readers of this literature learning to grasp the nature of contemporary social problems and, at times, are even encouraged to join in the social movement advocating reform. The aim of this course is therefore to introduce students to representative works and authors of this genre and the social and historical background of Korea as featured in this literature.
