Course Title: Survey of Japanese Art I
Course Number: ART321
Course Description: This course surveys art of figural making in Japanese visual and religious cultures. We will discuss how figures and animals came to assume a visual form of their own and how their images were used, perceived, and transformed. We will also explore symbolic and socio-political meanings of this type of image, and relationships between storytelling, ritual performances, and bodily/visual formations of holy figures. As many of these images were considered as icons, sharing sacred qualities of deities, saints, and spirits, they exerted power and influences over those who venerated, produced, and looked at them. This course will explore this aspect of figural images, and the ways in which they shaped ideas, identity, and social relations.
