Course Description: In this class, we will overview Japanese diplomatic relations since 1945, with particular focus on their relations with the United States, China, and South Korea. More specifically, we will see how Japan’s foreign relations have been informed by the Cold War – or U.S. Cold War strategy for Asia – and understand how Japan has explored and built up relations with China/ Taiwan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, as well as the Soviet Union/ Russia within the framework of the U.S.-Japan alliance. Through lecture, reading assignments, and discussion, you can not only increase your general knowledge of postwar Japanese diplomatic relations with these countries/ areas but also nurture your understanding of critical issues lying in them – such as the pacifist constitution and the U.S.-Japan security treaty, the San Francisco peace treaty and the issue of reparation/ compensation, territorial disputes, and the so-called history problem.
