Course Details

Country: Australia
Institution: Curtin University
Course Title: Agricultural Microbiology
Course Number: AGRI3006
Course Description: Agricultural Microbiology will introduce students to agriculturally important microbes such as viruses, nematodes, oomycetes, fungi and bacteria such as Rhizobium, Agrobacterium and Pseudomonas, which are important in the context of plant health and the prevention of control of plant disease. The concept of microbial taxonomy and phylogeny of these organisms will also be discussed. A series of practical laboratory sessions will be used to demonstrate methods in the identification of microorganisms using techniques such as microscopy. Genetics of bacteria, antibiotic resistance and infection assays with oomycetes and fungi will also be demonstrated. In addition, the practical component aims to demonstrate the use of molecular biology in agriculture. Transposon mutagenesis and plant genetic modification via agroinfection are some examples of molecular biology application. Upon the completion of the unit, students will be highly familiar with current crop protection strategies against biotic factors.
