Course Description:
This introductory foundational course teaches students to place the study of English-language culture within a broader historical and social context. Position of the course in terms of language proficiency: In the first year of the bachelor programme in English, students of English are expected to consolidate a CEFR B2 level of language proficiency.
This course does not require knowledge of Dutch. Exchange students can enrol for this course, provided they meet the language requirements and possess the initial competences. This course offers a concise introduction to the history of the UK, the US, the postcolonial world that used to form the British Empire and the more recent culture and society of the English- language world. To master English at the initial level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This does not apply to students taking courses taught in their native language (English).
