Course Description:
This course is designed for people who want to become managers, human resource professionals, or consultants—people who really want to understand what drives performance and how to bring people together effectively. This course is economics-based, which means that: (1) we assume that workers maximize their utility and employers maximize their profit; (2) we analyze equilibria that arise as a result of strategic interactions; and (3) our evaluation criterion for organizations is “efficiency”. The strength of economics is the ability to conceptualize problems and provide clear prescriptions for problems that plague many managers. This course is a strategy course, too. According to Michael Porter, strategy is creating fit among a company’s activities. The typical question we ask during our case discussion is what activities the firm should combine and how these activities support its strategic position. Topics include hiring, turnover, training, pay for performance, job assignment, tournament, seniority-based pay, evaluation, job
