Course Description:
This course intends to examine the historical process of transformation of world politics during the Cold War period from 1945 to 1990. Understanding the historical process is essential in order to grasp the present trends of world politics. Without knowing the Cold War, it is almost impossible to understand where we are now living and where we are heading for. Generally speaking, many novices in historical study of the Cold War tend to draw rather a simplistic picture about it. For example, the Cold War was an international political process of US-Soviet strategic and ideological confrontations which never reached a third world war. But this widely shared image is not at all appropriate to properly depict the highly complexed historical reality of the Cold War. In order to comprehend the complexity, it is necessary for us to analyze multiple actors and issues which interactively determined the process of Cold War
