Course Title: Syntax
Course Number: ANG 303
Course Description: In this seminar we will deal with the syntax of English in three dimensions: history of grammatical theory, synchrony and diachrony of English. We will focus on the synchronic and diachronic perspective, i.e. we will define a number of intriguing syntactic phenomena of Present-Day English (which are compared with German) and then go back in time and take a look at how they developed over time. We will discuss data from the main stages of English, Old English, Middle English, and Early Modern English and look at historical data. In addition you will learn a bit about the history of grammatical theory (structuralism, the rise of generativism) and to explain syntactic changes by evaluating different theories.
Language: English
