Course Description: Designed to introduce students to the key concepts and questions in linguistics, focusing on language as a scientific study and specifically on Spanish linguistics. It explores human language, a complex and evolving system, and its role as a sophisticated means of communication. The first part of the course covers the Spanish language in detail, looking at it both as a system and as a tool for social interaction. We will identify and understand the basic components of the linguistic system and learn the necessary terminology to facilitate further study in both general and Spanish linguistics. In the second half of the course, we will turn our attention to the diversity of the Spanish language. It also addresses the value of different languages and challenge common prejudices and misconceptions about them. It explores the development of linguistic theories and methods, with a focus on both general and Spanish linguistics.
