Course Title:
Principles of Comparative Politics
Course Number:
POL1025
Course Description:
Comparative politics is an incredibly broad field of study. For our purposes, it can be described as the systematic and scientific comparison of how political power is organized, contested, and used across and within states. It includes everything from the study of state formation to financial crises, voting behavior to civil wars.
This course introduces issues and concepts in comparative politics, primarily focusing on advanced industrial democracies, with a view to understanding and explaining their differences and similarities with respect to political institutions, the behavior of key political actors, and their policymaking processes and performance. It aims to do this while considering ‘politics’ in a broad sense that expands our focus to include social movements and processes.
