Course Description: The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of the history of modern Japan (1868 to present). We will give attention to political, economic, social, and cultural developments, as well as reflect on history as a discipline. To gain such an understanding, we will read and discuss some major works about Japan and travel to sites/museums around Tokyo. Through our visits, reading and discussion, we will consider questions such as: Why study history? How is history written? What was the Meiji Restoration? Why and how did Japanese modernize itself? What factors led to World War II? How did Japan rebuild after World War II? How did Japan become an economic superpower and how did it decline after the bursting of the economic bubble? What are problems facing Japan in the near future?
