Course Description: This course will explore the complex relationship between pluralism and community. By ‘pluralism’, I refer to the existence of multiple races, ethnicities, cultural groups, religions, factional interests, and political persuasions in society. By ‘community,’ I refer to the existence of what we can broadly call a ‘sense of togetherness’ among members of society. There are reasons to believe, at first glance, that pluralism and community are both valued goods. The coexistence of multiple races, ethnicities, cultural groups, and religions might express the ideals of freedom and equality, just as robust political competition might indicate that people can dissent without fear of retribution. Likewise, a sense of community might suggest that people trust one another, that they value living together, and that they are predisposed to cooperate.
