Course Title: The Ethics of Public Institutions and Political Corruption
Course Number:
Course Description: This is a course in political theory and focuses on the ethics of public institutions. Students will be guided to explore several normative questions about specific kinds of issues and dilemmas that arise in the archi- tecture, administration and maintenance of public institutions. We will analyse how institutional norms and mechanisms affect individual behaviour, but also how the action of role occupants in an institution is crucial for its well-functioning. Some of the questions that we will discuss during the seminar are: What are public institutions and the normative ideas that should regulate them? What are the rights and duties of officehold- ers in public institutions? Is it wrong from an ethical point of view and why? How should the responsibility for political corruption be distributed within and across public institutions? What are the anticorruption duties of individuals and institutions?
