Course Description: This course discusses a wide range of theoretical approaches to translation. It explores the multiple meanings of translation, its internal dynamics, and political significance in the contemporary world. Students will be introduced to the field of translation studies through a historically encompassing survey of its core questions and principal authors. We will engage with problems of translation as a privileged perspective and entry point into literary and humanistic studies. This course combines an overview of the history of translation from its early moments all the way to the establishment of the discipline of translation studies in the 1960s and 1970s and offers a critical appraisal of the multiple aspects of contemporary translation theory.
