Course Description: The course will question discourses of Japanese popular culture in the critical spirit of cultural studies. First, the students will be introduced to modern Japanese culture through lectures, and encouraged to reexamine their areas of interest through reading of texts on the topic written by international body of experts. In the latter half of the semester, the students are required to prepare presentations about their favorite films, TV shows, music, games, sports or other products of Japanese popular culture, and explain in detail why and how those contents are attractive for global audiences. Qualitative, critical and comparative analysis methodology will be applied to all types of content: audio, textual, visual and multimedia. Themes related to material culture and daily life in Japan are also welcome as topics of presentations.
