Course Description: The aim of this course is to offer opportunities for students to familiarize themselves with materials related to Japanese culture and society. We will be dealing with materials from a variety of genres including traditional haiku poetry, modern poetry, fairytales, and contemporary short stories. Exchange students are most welcome to join the class. Discussion between international students and local students will constitute the main part of the class. By exchanging their views on the readings, students are encouraged to question whether there is something in the work that makes it particularly "Japanese", or whether the work can be read from a universal perspective.
