Course Description: The goal of the course is to familiarize students with basic concepts, issues and challenges in the realm of public interest (community) interpreting and translation in Japan. Before turning its attention to Japanese-English interpreting and translation in the legal setting, the course will first provide an introduction to Interpreting and Translation Studies at large and an overview of relevant literature on public interest interpreting and translation, forensic linguistics as well as related paradigms in English studies (especially those focusing on the global nature and role of the English language). Some basic exercises related to interpreting and translation (e.g. shadowing or revising texts using ‘Plain English’) may be introduced, however no Japanese proficiency is required to enroll in the course. Students will be expected to read portions of relevant literature, conduct individual and/or group research and present their findings in class, participate actively in group discussions and submit a final term
