Course Description: There is no doubt that the root of modern Japanese culture is Japanese traditional culture. Deepening knowledge in traditional Japan is surely essential for understanding Japan and Japanese culture now. To recognize the uniqueness of Japan in the world, we should start with comparing and evaluating Japan seen from outside and Japan seen from inside. ● The first half of the semester will be lectures and discussions on the history and uniqueness of Japanese traditional arts and cultures. The second half of the semester will be hands-on practices of Japanese traditional dances (by the school of Ohtsuki Noh play & the school of Nishikawa-ryu), Japanese traditional drum (by Ooharu Taiko Owari Ichiza), and Shamisen: three-stringed Japanese lute (by the master Kineya Santaro).
