Course Description:
The main aim of this course is for students to obtain critical knowledge of the oldest known philosophical traditions, as well as insight into the coherence and importance of these traditions. After successfully completing this course, students will be able to describe in their own words, and using core philosophical notions, the development and schools of philosophy in the Greco-Roman traditions; describe in their own words, and using core philosophical notions, the development and schools of philosophy in the Chinese and Sanskrit traditions; describe interconnections between the above traditions; analyse at a basic level primary sources from the above traditions. Course Content This course mainly covers the beginnings of philosophy, and does so in two synchronous lines: Greco-Roman on the one hand, and Sanskrit and Chinese traditions on the other hand, starting in the 6th century BCE, and ending in the 7th century CE.
