Course Description: JPL125 is designed to acquaint students with grammatical structures and vocabulary appropriate for beginning learners who have successfully completed the Japanese courses at the college level for approximately one semester (ca. 55 hours). This course is aimed at students to reach CEFR level A1+/the beginning of A2. Through a variety of classroom activities, students develop all four linguistic skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) as well as language knowledge such as grammar, vocabulary, and kanji. Students will learn how to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). The course will also introduce students to some fundamental Japanese sociocultural concepts that will help them interpret the underlying meaning behind what is said and what is not said in their encounters with Japanese people on and off campus. The course covers Chapters 7 to 12
